FORMATION IN THE ORDER OF FRANCISCAN SERVANTS
The Discernment and Formation process begins in a local community of the Order. Once you begin the process of formation, the process generally follows this pattern:
Postulancy-A period of no less than 6 months- an understanding of discernment and vocation - brief review of the Christian Faith and morals- prayer life and apostolic activity- phases of Franciscan formation and expectations- life of St. Francis - branches of the Franciscan family- Rule and brief history of the Order of Franciscan Servants- an understanding of some of our Franciscan symbols- a Franciscan prayer experience
Rite: Ceremony of Introduction and Welcoming
Noviate-A period of no less than 1 year- a deeper understanding of discernment and vocation in the Order of Franciscan Servants- lives of Sts. Francis and Clare - writings of Sts. Francis and Clare- history of the Franciscan movement- organizational structure of the Order of Franciscan Servants- introduction to the Order of Franciscan Servants Rule, General Constitutions and Ritual- introduction to Sacred Scripture and how it impacts the life of a Franciscan - an understanding of lay/secular/religious spirituality- an introduction to praying the Liturgy of the Hours- other Franciscan prayer experiences
Rite: Rite of Admission
Profession- a detailed study of the Order of Franciscan Servants Rule & Principles- Sacred Scripture, especially the Gospels, and the opportunity to experience, interiorize and integrate Gospel values- Franciscan spirituality- Secular/Religious Franciscan apostolic life- a detailed study of the Order of Franciscan Servants General Constitutions- lives of Franciscan saints - Franciscan traditions and stories (e.g., Crown Rosary, Stations of the Cross, Greccio, Gubbio, etc.)- writings of Sts. Francis and Clare- introduction to Franciscan sources- continued experience in praying and leading the Liturgy of the Hours- other Franciscan prayer experiences- a detailed study of the Order of Franciscan Servants Ritual, especially the Rites of Profession

ONGOING FORMATION- a detailed study of the Order of Franciscan Servants Rule and Way of Life- writings of Sts. Francis, Clare, and Bonaventure- Franciscan history- official documents and statements of the Franciscan family- Order of Franciscan Servants Ritual - international, national and regional Franciscan documents
